What Is Luft in Chess?
Luft is an escape square created for the king, usually by moving one of the pawns in front of a castled king, such as h2 to h3. The word is German for air. Luft protects the king from back-rank mates by giving it a square to step to.
Examples
1. Rxc8+ Qf8 2. Rxf8+ Kxf8 3. Qd8#
Black has no luft. Rxc8+ forces ...Qf8, and after Rxf8+ Kxf8 Qd8 is mate. The f7, g7, and h7 pawns that shelter the king are also its prison.
1. h3 Rxc1+ 2. Qxc1 h6
Here both sides make luft at a quiet moment. After h3 and ...h6, each king has an escape square, and the queens can leave the back rank without allowing a back-rank mate.
Why luft matters
A castled king behind three unmoved pawns is safe from most attacks but has no square to go to if a rook or queen checks along the back rank. Many games, especially at club level, end with a back-rank mate that one quiet pawn move would have prevented.
Luft also frees your own pieces. Without it, a rook or queen often has to stay on the back rank as a guard. After luft is made, those pieces can go and do something useful.
Which pawn to move
The h-pawn is the most common choice, because h3 or h6 creates the least weakness. Moving the g-pawn weakens the squares around the king more, and moving the f-pawn opens a diagonal to the king, so those choices need more care.
Think about which color the new square is on. If the opponent has a bishop that controls h2, then h3 creates a square the king cannot use, and g3 may be better.
When to make luft
Make luft at a calm moment, when there is no immediate threat and the move does not lose time in a sharp position. A good habit is to do it once the heavy pieces start to fight for open files, before the back rank becomes a target.
Common questions
Is h3 always a good move?
No. It costs a tempo and can create a target for an attack with ...g5 and ...g4. It is good when it stops a real idea, such as a back-rank mate or a piece coming to g4.
Does luft weaken my king?
A little, because it moves a pawn from the king's shelter. In most middlegames and endgames the safety from back-rank mates is worth far more.
