What Are Hanging Pawns in Chess?

Hanging pawns are two connected pawns standing side by side on half-open files, usually on c5 and d5 for Black or c4 and d4 for White, with no friendly pawns on the neighboring files. They control the center but can become targets.

Example

1. d4 d5 2. c4 e6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Bg5 Be7 5. e3 O-O 6. Nf3 h6 7. Bh4 b6 8. cxd5 Nxd5 9. Bxe7 Qxe7 10. Nxd5 exd5 11. Rc1 Be6 12. Qa4 c5 13. Qa3 Rc8 14. dxc5 bxc5

In this Queen's Gambit Declined line Black ends up with hanging pawns on c5 and d5. They control the center, and the half-open b-file helps Black, but White's queen and rook already aim at c5.

Strengths of hanging pawns

Side by side, the two pawns control four central squares, and either one can advance at the right moment. A pawn push such as ...d4 or ...c4 can open lines, cramp the opponent, or create a passed pawn.

They also give the pieces behind them space and open files on both sides, which is useful for active rook play.

Weaknesses of hanging pawns

No other pawn can defend them, so they rely on pieces. If one of them is forced to advance, the other is left behind as a backward or isolated pawn, and the square in front of the pawn left behind can become an outpost.

The opponent's plan is to put pressure on them from the front and the side with rooks, queen, and minor pieces until one has to move or fall.

Plans for both sides

The side with hanging pawns keeps its pieces active and looks for the right moment to push one pawn, ideally with a concrete gain. The opponent attacks the pawns, avoids letting them advance with effect, and tries to provoke an advance that leaves a weak pawn behind.

Common questions

Are hanging pawns strong or weak?

They can be either. With active pieces and a good moment to advance they are strong. If they are attacked and fixed, they become a target.

How are hanging pawns different from an IQP?

An IQP is a single isolated pawn. Hanging pawns are two pawns side by side. Pushing one hanging pawn, or trading one, often turns the other into an isolated pawn.
